Introduction of YATOO International Project
YATOO – a Korean Nature Artists’ Association which was founded in 1981, started working with Nature equipped with nothing but empty hands and wide open minds and seeking direct inspirations from Nature. With this attitude, ideas reveal itself easily that enables them to create impromptu Nature artworks on the spot. The discovery and the possibility of Nature Art* elated them that they continually practice it on a regular basis until today. Since 1989 in an effort to develop and expand the concept of Nature art, YATOO organized exhibitions and artists exchange programs like the Geumgang Nature Art Biennale and the YATOO International Residence Program, and invited international and local artists who actively work directly with Nature that encourages healthy discourses and sharing of ideas and methodologies.
YATOO International Project (YATOO-i), is a newly-organized project and is based on the idea that the Nature we live in is seamlessly connected regardless of the human-designated borderlines. YATOO-i is not bound with a limited space, but, it covers the entire parameters of Nature – mountains, fields, streams, rivers, seas and everything that is found in nature – living and non-living like plants, trees, insets, soil, rocks etc, as well as the intangible elements like the wind, sound, light, shadows and so on. Here, the artist enters Nature letting go of any ideas how to make art and just fully immerse himself and make a silent dialogue with it. It is Nature itself, in a sense provides direction to the artist how it is to be engage actively in a particular artwork. With this, Nature is not only utilized as a place or site for erecting artworks or just using it as just mere materials, but, Nature itself becomes an artwork or an integral part of an artwork.
YATOO-i project is like a musical orchestra wherein each member plays an instrument individually that creates a unified music together. Similarly, each artist of YATOO-i makes his artwork in his chosen spot in Nature, in their respective countries, using his personal methodologies, that, when all the artworks combined and put together online or in a gallery becomes a bigger whole – the YATOO-i Project.
Everything comes from the Creator and we believe and accept that Nature Art is a present given from Him. YATOO-i Project is a nature art movement that encourages nature artists with similar passionate interests in creating artworks and awareness in making a peaceful and harmonious coexistence of human beings, Nature and Art possible and guided by a humble attitude and appreciation towards Nature. YATOO encourages active participation from nature artists worldwide.
*Nature Art ? in this concept, Nature is not just utilized as a place or used as mere materials for erecting and making artworks, but, Nature plays an active participation in becoming an active component of an artwork. Nature itself becomes the artwork. YATOO's works are expressed by simple installations or performances interacting with Nature and doesn't leave artworks behind.

야투인터내셔널프로젝트 서문
1981년 창립된 한국자연미술가협회 ‘야투野投’(이하 야투) 회원들은 아무런 준비 없이 빈 몸과 열린 마음으로 자연 속에서 작업하였다. 이러한 야투 회원들의 태도는 자연 현장에서 즉각적으로 떠오르는 아이디어를 통해 작업하는 자연미술*을 가능하게 하였다. 작가들 자신도 예기치 못했던 자연미술의 발견과 가능성은 야투 작가들을 고무시켰으며 지금까지도 정기적으로 자연 속에서 작업하게 하는 원동력이 되었다. 1989년 이후 야투는 자연미술의 발전과 확산을 위하여 금강자연미술비엔날레, 야투국제레지던스프로그램등과같은전시및작가교류프로그램을기획하고진행하였으며이를통해자연과더불어활발하게작업하는국내외작가들과만나자연미술의정신과방법에관하여함께 토론하고 발표회를 갖는 교류의 장을 만들었다. 새롭게 시작하는 야투인터내셔널프로젝트(이하 야투아이)는 우리가 살고 있는 이 땅이 인간에 의해 설정된 국경과 상관없이 하나로 연결되어있다는 생각을 바탕으로 기획되었다. 야투아이는 자연의 모든 요소들, 산과 들 그리고 시냇물과 강, 바다와 같은 자연 속에서 살아가는 풀, 나무, 벌레, 그리고 흙과 바위와 같은 무생물뿐만 아니라 바람, 소리, 그림자등과 같은 보이지 않거나 만질 수 없는 그 어떤 것과도 제한 없이 만난다. 이 프로젝트를 통해서 예술가들은 자연 속에 자신을 맡기고 자연의 속삭임을 듣고 소통 함으로서 작업의 방향을 찾아 나갈 것이다. 야투아이는 본 프로젝트에 참가하는 작가들이 자연을 단지 작품을 설치하기 위한 장소나 재료로 이용하기 보다는 자연자체가 작품 안에서 직접 작용하게 함으로서 오히려 자연의 생생한 생명력을 작품 속에 담아내길 기대한다. 마치 많은 연주자들의 소리가 모여 하나의 오케스트라를 이루는 것과 같이, 야투아이프로젝트는 각각 자신의 방식으로 자연과 만나 전개한 작가들의 작품들이 온라인상에서 혹은 전시장에서 하나로 모여 아름다운 하모니를 이루게 될 것이다. 야투아이 프로젝트는 자연에 대한 깊은 관심을 바탕으로 작업하는 자연미술가들이 함께 추구하는 자연미술운동으로서 우리가 만나게 될 자연미술 작품들은 자연과 인간을 창조한 신의 선물로 받아들인다. 인간과 자연 그리고 미술의 평화로운 공존을 자연을 향한 겸손한 마음으로 실현하고자 하는 많은 작가들의 적극적인 참여를 기다린다.
*자연미술: 야투의 자연미술은 자연을 작품을 위한 장소 혹은 재료로 자연을 이용하기 보다는 자연 자체가 작품 속에서 직접 작용하는 미술이다. 야투의 자연미술은 간단한 설치나 행위를 통해 이루어지며 현장에 작품을 남기지 않는 경우가 많다.

Nature Art Movement by YATOO(野投)
I. YATOO
YATOO is a group of nature artists who work around Gongju, the ancient capital of Baekje, which is a small city located along the beautiful Geum River. Members who were young artists in their 20s at YATOO's establishment in 1981 have been working with nature based on its love of artistic inspiration. After thirty years of its history, YATOO's purpose and work context are winning sympathy from a large number of domestic and foreign artists. Nature Art movement of YATOO developed through 'Four Seasons Research Society' that has been regularly opening since 1981. Members who grew up in Korea where there is a distinct change in four seasons worked to react to the visual change of nature that is created and extinct according to seasons, its inherent order, and other various aspect of nature. Through stimulating each others' sensibilities, members who were limited audience towards each other's work as well as artists developed nature art methodology that can be called YATOO-style.
II. Characteristics and method of YATOO's works
In 1980s, YATOO aspired to find a balance point between living nature and human's artistic will, rather than pushing in human's artistic idea to nature's space. In other words, the major characteristic of YATOO is that, nature has an interactive structure which sufficiently extracts human's thoughts while maintaining its own natural aspect as it is. YATOO's artists prefer to enter inside nature and work along with no preparation but empty body and mind. Their works are often formed by restrained actions through using their body or are started from a natural object they stumble upon at nature’s site. Since YATOO's works are formed through minimum action, installation or simple drawing, not many people have seen the works themselves at the site. YATOO's works which everyday's simple actions such as piling, connecting, drawing, inserting, throwing, etc readily become a method of art work in nature have an appeal to arouse an enthusiasm from audience to want to participate as an artist rather than staying passive. The reason that their works arouse a vivid inspiration of the site for long even though they are photographed is that, a familiar nature planted inside viewers is reflected in the work context. YATOO members' works are different from either supply-centered Land Art which attempts to violently approach towards nature, using a large amount of production cost or work type of artists that stay at the level of outside sculpture or installation through using natural object. YATOO members are not artists of activism that directly expose environmental problem issue in nature. However, their works deliver an artistic nexus that was not seen between a living nature and human and silently suggest that through this, recovering a peaceful relationship between nature and human is possible.
III. YATOO's Achievement
The value of YATOO's achievement in nature art movement was acknowledged rather through international exchanges more than through domestic art circles. It spread out through an exhibition with foreign artists. The exhibition in Hamburg Art College in 1989 worked as a starting opportunity and it entailed Geumgang International Nature Art Exhibition in Gongju, 1991. In 1992, it was opened in Schueberg, Germany, and another opened in Samukawa, Japan in 1994. Especially, Geumgang International Nature Art Exhibition in Gongju, 1995 was a large scale Nature Art project which 128 artists from 23 countries worked and stayed together for 28 days, which is recorded as unprecedented in art history. In 1980s, YATOO's activities maintained the characteristic of a research society and had a passive method of communicating with outside through a source book. However, the method of accomplishing a detailed outcome on site was naturally required since 1991 when they started to progress public exhibition events with foreign artists. This worked as an opportunity for each artist to initiate a multilateral approach, in order to find their own way of expression more readily. YATOO members in 1990s accumulated their planning capability as shown in planning international exhibitions, which worked to broaden their activity. Following that, YATOO regulated Nature Art exchange through international exhibition projects and to accomplish a continuous research activity towards Nature Art, they finally established the world's first biennale to be held focusing on a specialized area of Nature Art, in 2004. Along with the planning of biennale, another major achievement of YATOO is the construction of Nature Art Park in Mt. Yeonmi which was the venue for 2006 Geumgang Nature Art Biennale. From now, it will be filled with nature artists' works from all around the world and will become an international attraction that a lot of people will come to visit. In 2009, YATOO also established International Nature Art Center equipped with indoor exhibition hall, Nature Art reference room, a place for a Nature Art education program, artists' accommodations, etc inside the Nature Art Park in Mt. Yeonmi. One more achievement made by YATOO members' affection and vigorous activities towards Nature Art is the operation of the YATOO International Residence Program. This program is working as an opportunity to inform YATOO'S Nature Art methodology spontaneously developed in Korea and they are simultaneously developing Nature Art movement with foreign artists.
IV. YATOO's Vision
Since its establishment in 1981, YATOO kept a distance from the Korean mainstream art society that was strongly influenced by Western Art and explored a new methodology of art to realize human's natural artistic will based on Koreans' traditional nature friendly sentiment. A large number of artists accomplished their art at YATOO's site and even after some left, they continue to broaden and develop their works based on the experience within nature. YATOO members that are active at present are Seunghyun Ko, Heejoon Kang, Eungwoo Lee, Hyunhee Ko, Haesim Kim, Jangjik Chung, Jonghyup Lee, Namchul Shin, Seonju Lee, Kang Hur, Chungyeon Cho, Jeonchung Kang, etc. Wongil Jeon, Dongshik Lim, Dongjo Yoo, Kyungjya Nah, etc served an important role as elders and promoted international exchanges around the time of the Establishment. Apart from them, artists such as Yeonmin Chung, Seongwon Lee, etc accomplished good works through Four Season Research Society. Wongil Jeon has been cooperating with YATOO members as a director of Sonahmoo Alternative Art Space. YATOO which has been developing a new methodology of art through a direct communication with nature should now supply vitality to domestic and foreign art society through vigorous activities. Now they are trying to serve a role in opening a field of activity more widely to the artists who wish to work inside nature through YATOO International Project. Furthermore, members should take it as an important task to supply a new perspective that one can mediate on how to find a win-win way between nature and human through art, when natural disasters and environmental problems originating from humans' greed are becoming a worldly issue.

야투(野投)의 자연미술운동
I 야투
야투는 아름다운 금강을 끼고 있는 백제의 고도 공주를 중심으로 활동하고 있는 자연미술가 그룹이다. 1981년 창립 당시 20대의 젊은 작가들이었던 회원들은 자연이 내어 주는 예술적 영감에 대한 사랑을 바탕으로 지금까지 자연과 더불어 작업하고 있다. 이들의 활동이 30년 넘게 이어져오면서 그 취지와 작업 내용이 많은 국내외 예술가들에게 공감을 얻고 있다. 야투의 자연미술운동은 1981년 이후 지금까지 정기적으로 열리는 '사계절 연구회'를 통하여 발전하였다. 사계절의 변화가 뚜렷한 한국의 자연환경 속에서 자란 이들은 계절에 따라 생성 소멸하는 자연의 시각적 변화와 그 내재된 질서, 그리고 자연의 다양한 양태에 반응하는 작업을 하였다. 회원 스스로가 작가이자 서로의 작품에 대해 한정된 감상자였던 당시의 멤버들은 작품을 통해 서로의 감성을 자극하면서 야투적이라고 할 만한 자연미술 방법론을 발전시켰다.
II. 야투 작업의 특성과 방법
1980년대 야투는 자연 공간 속에 인간의 미술적 아이디어를 밀어 넣기보다는 살아있는 자연과 인간의 예술 의지가 균형을 이루는 지점을 찾으려고 노력하였다. 즉 자연의 자연성이 그대로 유지되는 가운데 인간의 생각을 부족함 없이 받아내는 상호작용의 구조를 지닌 것이 야투 작업의 중요한 특성이라고 할 수 있다. 야투의 작가들은 아무런 준비 없이 빈 몸과 빈 마음으로 자연 안으로 들어가 자연과 더불어 작업하기를 좋아한다. 그들의 작업은 자신의 몸을 이용한 절제된 행위로 이루어지거나, 자연 현장에서 우연히 마주친 자연물로부터 작업을 시작할 때가 많다. 야투의 작품들이 최소한의 행위나 설치 그리고 간단한 드로잉을 통하여 이루어지기 때문에 현장에서 그 작품을 실제로 본 사람이 많지는 않다. 쌓고, 연결하고, 긋고, 끼우고, 던지는 등의 일상의 단순한 행위가 자연 속에서 곧바로 미술작업의 방법이 되는 야투의 작업들은 작품을 보는 사람들을 수동적인 감상자의 위치에 머물게 하기보다, 그들로 하여금 자신도 한번 해보고 싶다는 적극적인 마음을 불러일으키게 하는 매력을 지니고 있다. 비록 사진 속에 담겨진 작품들이지만 오래도록 현장의 생생한 감흥을 유발시키는 것은 보는 이의 기억 속에 자리 잡고 있는 친숙한 자연이 그 작업의 내용과 만나 상승 작용하기 때문일 것이다. 야투 회원들의 작업은 많은 제작비를 들여서 자연에 대한 폭력적 접근을 시도하는 물량 중심의 대지미술이나, 자연물을 이용한 야외 조각 혹은 설치의 범주에 머무르는 작가들의 작업 유형과도 구별된다. 이들은 자연 속에서 환경 문제의 이슈를 직접적으로 드러내는 행동주의 작가들도 아니다. 야투의 작업들은 살아있는 자연과 인간 사이에 보이지 않던 미적 연결점을 찾아 사람들에게 전해주는 한편 이를 통해 자연과 인간의 평화로운 관계를 회복할 수 있는 길을 말없이 제안한다.
III 야투의 성과
야투가 일궈낸 자연미술 운동의 성과는 국내 미술계를 통해서 알려지기보다 오히려 국제 교류를 통해서 그 가치를 인정받았으며 외국 작가들과의 전시를 통해 확산되었다고 할 수 있다. 1989년 함부르크 미술대학에서 열린 전시가 계기가 되어 1991년 공주에서 금강 국제자연미술전이 개최되었으며, 1992년에는 독일 슈베르그에서, 1994년에는 일본의 사무가와에서 자연미술전시회가 연속적으로 열렸다. 특히 1995년 공주에서 열린 금강 국제자연미술전은 23개국에서 온 128명의 작가들이 모여 28일 동안 숙식을 함께하며 작업한, 미술사상 유래 없는 대규모 자연미술 프로젝트로 기록되고 있다. 1980년대 야투의 활동이 연구회의 성격을 유지하면서 자료집을 통해 외부와 소통하는 소극적인 방식을 취하는 데 그쳤으나, 외국작가들과의 공식적인 전시행사를 진행한 1991년 이후부터는 구체적인 결과를 현장에 남기는 방식이 자연스럽게 요구되었는데, 이는 작가별로 더 한층 자신만의 표현방식을 찾으려는 다각적인 시도를 하게 하는 계기가 되었다. 1990년대 야투 회원들은 국제전 기획을 통하여 자신들의 활동의 장을 확장해 나갈 수 있는 기획 역량을 쌓아갔다. 그에 따라 야투는 국제적인 전시 프로젝트를 통한 자연미술 교류를 정례화하고, 자연미술에 대한 지속적인 연구 활동을 위하여 마침내 2004년 자연미술이라는 특성화된 영역을 중심으로 열리는 세계 최초의 비엔날레를 출범시켰다. 2006년 금강 자연미술 비엔날레의 현장이 된 연미산 자연미술공원의 조성은 비엔날레의 기획과 아울러 야투의 중요한 성취중의 하나일 것이다. 앞으로 이 공원은 세계 각국의 자연미술가들의 작품으로 채워질 것이며, 많은 사람들이 찾는 국제적 명소가 되리라 생각한다. 야투는 또한 2009년 연미산 자연미술공원 내에 실내전시장, 자연미술 자료실, 자연미술교육 프로그램을 위한 공간, 그리고 작가 숙소 등이 구비된 국제 자연미술센터를 건립하였다. 야투회원들의 자연미술에 대한 애정과 왕성한 활동이 만들어낸 또 다른 성취 가운데 하나는 야투 국제레지던스 프로그램의 운영이다. 이 프로그램은 한국에서 자생적으로 발전한 야투의 자연미술 방법론을 세계 미술계에 알리는 동시에 외국작가들과 더불어 자연미술운동을 발전시키는 중요한 계기가 되고 있다.
IV 야투의 비젼
1981년 창립 이후 야투는 서구 미술의 강력한 영향 아래 있던 한국 주류 미술계와는 거리를 두고, 자연친화적인 한국인의 전통적인 정서를 바탕으로 인간 본연의 예술의지를 실현할 새로운 미술방법을 탐색하였다. 많은 작가들이 야투현장에서 작품을 남겼으며, 비록 야투를 떠났더라도 자연 속에서의 경험을 바탕으로 자신의 작업을 확장, 발전시키고 있다. 현재까지 활동하고 있는 야투회원으로는 고승현, 강희준, 이응우, 고현희, 김해심, 정장직, 이종협, 신남철, 이선주, 허강, 조충연, 강전충 등이며, 창립 당시 중요한 역할을 담당했던 임동식과, 유동조, 전원길, 나경자 등은 국제교류의 추진과 자연미술의 발전을 위해 함께 했었다. 그 외에도 정연민, 이성원등 여러 작가들이 사계절 연구회를 통하여 좋은 작품을 남겼으며 전원길은 대안미술공간 소나무의 대표로서 자연미술의 연구와 발전을 위해 야투회원들과 지속적으로 협력하고 있다. 자연과의 직접적인 교감을 통해 새로운 유형의 미술방법론을 발전시켜온 야투는 이제 야투 인터내셔널 프로젝트를 통해 자연 속에서 작업하기를 원하는 작가들에게 좀 더 넓은 활동의 장을 열어주는 역할을 시도하고 있다. 인간의 탐욕으로 인한 자연재해와 환경문제가 전 세계적인 이슈가 되고 있는 이때, 야투 회원들은 미술을 통해 자연과 인간이 어떻게 상생의 길을 찾을 수 있는지 되새겨 볼 수 있는 새로운 관점을 제공하는 일 또한 중요한 과제로 받아들여야 할 것이다. |
