Abigail Doan

Environmental artist and researcher, Abigail Doan, divides her time between NYC and Europe. Her archival process explores the language of handmade design objects, craft methodologies, restorative/movement arts, and art print editions/publications.
Abigail's studio projects and site-specific installation works have been featured by Critical Making Lab, Greenmuseum, Inhabitat, Landviews, Treehugger, and Trendtablet, as well as The New York Times, HAND/EYE Magazine, KnitKnit, and Surface Design Journal. She is also profiled in the books, Craftivity, Slow Stitch: Mindful and Contemplative Textile Art, Fiber Art Today, The LAND/an art site (retrospective publication), and Green Guide for Artists.
Beyond the exhibition of her own art projects, she is an advisor for cultural heritage initiatives, environmental programming, and handcraft preservation. Curatorial projects and exhibition collaborations include Fete for the Senses, (Re) Fashioning Fiber, Fashioning Self and the Environment, Toolshedding, Tumbleweed Colony, Earth Tones L.A., Kraftmaking the Future, and creative art direction/educational outreach for the Haemimont Foundation in Sofia, Bulgaria, and NYC. She has also worked as an environmental researcher for documentary film and an art director for multi-media projects on archaeology.
Residencies include The LAND/an art site in New Mexico, An Artist Residency in Motherhood (NYC), as well as symposia, visiting artist talks, and exhibitions with the California College of the Arts (CA), Conflux/the Center for Architecture (NYC), the United Nations Environment Programme, MoMA PS1, Parsons School of Design (Design and Materials Lab), Pratt Institute/Design School, The Hunterdon Art Museum (NJ), Onoma Art Center (Finland), Atlantic Center for the Arts (FL), University of New Mexico Art Museum/Albuquerque (NM), Lancaster Museum of Art (PA), Paradise International Art Center (Iran), New Bulgarian University (Sofia), The Textile Arts Center (NYC), Russell Janis Gallery (Brooklyn), Yatoo-i/Korea, and other curated platforms.
A summa cum laude graduate of and former adjunct art professor at Purchase College, State University of New York, Abigail also attended The Hotchkiss School, Princeton University, and completed coursework at Dieu Donné and The Center for Book Arts in NYC. Her project documentation and research archives are viewable at Lost in Fiber, Toolshedding, Thracian Threads (forthcoming in 2019), and Walking Libraries (ongoing).
