About Yatoo International Project

Introduction of YATOO International Project

Yatoo – the Korean Nature Artists’ Association (hereinafter “Yatoo”) – was founded in 1981 and began working with Nature using nothing but empty hands and open minds, seeking direct inspiration from Nature. With this attitude, ideas revealed themselves effortlessly, enabling the creation of impromptu Nature Art* works on the spot. The discovery and possibilities of Nature Art elated the artists, leading them to continue the practice regularly to this day.

Since 1989, in an effort to develop and expand the concept of Nature Art, Yatoo has organized exhibitions and artist exchange programs such as the Geumgang Nature Art Biennale, the Yatoo International Artist-in-Residence Program, and the Global Nomadic Art Project. These programs have created opportunities to share methodologies and the spirit of Nature Art through exhibitions and meetings with international and local artists who actively work with Nature.

The Yatoo International Project (hereinafter “Yatoo-i”) was initiated based on the belief that the Nature we live in is seamlessly connected, regardless of human-designated borders. Yatoo encounters all elements of Nature—grasses, trees, and insects living in natural environments such as mountains, fields, streams, rivers, and seas, as well as inanimate objects like soil and rocks, and intangible elements such as light, wind, sound, and shadows.

Through this project, artists are encouraged to immerse themselves in Nature, discover the direction of their work by listening to Nature’s whispers, and communicate with it. Yatoo-i hopes that participating artists will infuse their works with Nature’s vivid vitality by allowing Nature itself to be actively involved in the creative process, rather than using it merely as a setting or material.

Yatoo-i is like a musical orchestra in which each performer plays their instrument individually, yet together they create a unified harmony. Similarly, each Yatoo-i artist creates their artwork in their own spot in Nature, in their respective countries, using their unique methodologies. These artworks are then brought together—online or in a gallery—to form a beautiful collective harmony.

Everything comes from the Creator, and we believe and accept that Nature Art is a gift given by Him. The Yatoo-i Project is a Nature Art movement that encourages artists with a shared passion to create meaningful artworks and raise awareness about peaceful, harmonious coexistence among humanity, Nature, and Art. It is guided by humility and deep appreciation toward Nature. Yatoo-i actively welcomes participation from Nature artists around the world.

* Nature Art : In this concept, Nature is not merely used as a setting or material for creating artworks. Instead, Nature takes an active role, becoming a vital component of the artwork itself. Nature becomes the artwork. Yatoo’s works are often expressed through simple compositions or performances in interaction with Nature, and in many cases, no physical artworks are left behind.

Operation of Yatoo-i

1. This project is primarily operated online, but it also includes activities such as exhibitions, publications, and workshops.

2. Artists of any nationality who agree with and share the spirit of Yatoo's Nature Art concept can participate in Yatoo-i by applying for membership. They can share photos of nature artworks created in their respective countries on the Yatoo-i website.

3. Yatoo-i conducts four regular nature art workshops each year, scheduled alongside Yatoo's Four Seasons Workshops in Korea. In addition to these regular workshops, all members can work individually, and their results are shared on the Yatoo-i website.

4. Yatoo-i will continually update its members about the Geumgang Nature Art Biennale, the Yatoo International Artist-in-Residence Program, the Global Nomadic Art Project, and all other Nature Art exhibitions and symposiums.

5. The rights to artworks submitted to Yatoo-i are jointly owned by the artist and Yatoo-i. Yatoo-i may use the works for exhibitions, publications, and other promotional activities related to the development of Yatoo-i. In the case of commercial sales, a separate contract will be required.
