Kathy Bruce is a site-specific environmental artist. She received an M.F.A from Yale University School of Art and a certificate from The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Ms. Bruce is the recipient of numerous grants and awards. She has recently completed a Fulbright Hayes Senior Scholarship Grant for Lecturing and Research in Puno Peru 2012 where she taught environmental art at the University of the Altiplano and researched totora reed boats in the tradition of Aymara weavers on Lake Titicaca. Other awards include; a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Fellowship 2010 -11,Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Individual Artist Grant 2005, Fulbright-Hayes Junior scholar grant to Peru (1983) and a Ford Foundation Grant for sculpture (1981). She has attended numerous residencies including I-Park Foundation, The Salltonstall Foundation, Stone Quarry Hill Art Park and Millay Colony.

Her artistic practice explores the subject of female mythological figures within the natural environment. These often take the form of bamboo structures that are built on, around and contain live plant material. Since 2005 she has completed over 16 large site-specific public art installations ranging in height from 12’ to 25’ and up to 45’ feet long, each working with a variety of sustainable materials based on the archetypal female image. Feature articles on her sculptural installations have appeared in the 2010 May-June issue of international SCULPTURE magazine and the April 2011 edition of Bamboo of the Americas Journal.
