Marty Miller

My work centers around experimental photographic techniques, but also frequently uses sound art and instillation to supplement photography, or increasingly to stand alone, of its own accord. While the means of expression constantly evolve, certain themes have shown themselves to be consistent to my work over the years. These include inquires into identity, 'natural' processes, as well as random and improvised experience. Increasingly, m work is being rooted in research into the role of visuality, audio-visual experience, and culturally-specific concepts of nature.

I am a practicing artist working in photography, soundart, and installation in South Korea. I have plans to exhibit this coming autumn and am always open for new places to do so.

I am currently pursuing my work in photography by living and teaching at a local university where I instruct students in photography, design, and English. Additionally, I work as a freelance photographer for a local magazine and sound designer for modern dance performances.

My interest in nature art is long and stems both from my arts study in university, as well as my encounters with Zen Buddhist practice in China as a youth. Studying abstract painting, I often used naturally-made pigments and painted using improvisational techniques. These interests led me to co-found an improvisational music and dance group in 2005, which used influences from 'nature' and our performance surroundings to conduct our performances with plan, in the moment. Overall, I found the best way for me to stay alert, alive, and ready for creative action in each moment was to pursue my practice within 'natural' ecosystems. As I grow older, I see this experience/mindset bleeding over into other settings, allowing me to be in 'nature' while in the midst of nearly any surroundings.
